A Fond Farewell to Sophie Rae McCauley
Rhonnie & LA's Beloved Canine Companion of 8.5 Years

Sophie Rae McCauley was a sweet girl. We got Sophie in 1997 from a friend of ours. Sophie was an English Mastiff and she represented the core of that breed. Although Sophie wasn't the typical size of an English Mastiff she was still 103.7, till her death on March 29, 2006, when she weighed 101 lbs. Sophie LOVED to be with us. She loved massages, treats, rollerblading, walking, and teasing other dogs.

Sophie had been experiencing some labored breathing and weakness. After several trips to the vet and having the cardiologist and radiologist look at Sophie, we discovered that she had a mass on her spleen. We had Sophie's spleen removed completely. This mass turned out to be hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the red blood cells. The first two weeks were a tough recovery for Sophie. She lost 10lbs in the first week after her surgery. The second week she was back to herself, eating, playing and gaining weight.

March 29th came as a surprise to the entire household. Sophie did not want to eat, play nor did she wag her tail when she saw me. I knew that something was wrong with Sophie Rae. She was intolerable to exercise, she tired easily, she had a pale color to the mucous membranes of the mouth and her eyes looked like she was crying.

At 7:30pm, Sophie and I headed to the ER in Longmont.Sophie could not get into my truck. I managed to lift her entire body into my truck, where she laid down until we got to ER. The Doctor at the ER room had some x-rays taken. We saw that she had internal bleeding around her liver. She was very uncomfortable. She was not happy and seemed to be very sad. The Dr. at the ER explained to myself and a few friends who where there to help me make the best possible decision for Sophie, that we had two choices: 1) give her fluids so she would feel good again. The problem with that was that Sophie's red blood palette was low and giving her fluids would make it lower, then requiring a blood transfusion, which would only buy us a few more days OR 2) give Sophie her needed release to Rainbow Bridge. For Sophie, we let her go. It was so hard and I am so very sad to have her gone. I have been crying every single night and day since Sophie has been gone.

Sophie was with us every single day for the last 8 1/2 years. She brought us so much joy. She will be missed dearly.

Sophie is survived by her canine companion Sydney Rae, and her two feline companions, Bobby Rae and Scooby Rae. Sammy Rae, her feline companion preceeded her in death.
